“What is so new about the new year?”

Ecclesiastes 1:1-9; 3:1-8

1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

2 “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher, “Vanity of vanities! All is vanity.”

3 What advantage does man have in all his work Which he does under the sun?

4 A generation goes and a generation comes, But the earth remains forever.

5 Also, the sun rises and the sun sets; And hastening to its place it rises there again.

6 Blowing toward the south, Then turning toward the north, The wind continues swirling along; And on its circular courses the wind returns.

7 All the rivers flow into the sea, Yet the sea is not full. To the place where the rivers flow, There they flow again.

8 All things are wearisome; Man is not able to tell it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing,
Nor is the ear filled with hearing.

9 That which has been is that which will be, And that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun.

The Preacher says... “Vanity of vanities! All is in vanity”  There is nothing new under the sun”... “It’s all just so wearisome!”

Life for the Preacher... seems empty and meaningless... filled with repetitious drudgery!

K Things that were once of great interest to him... he now finds tedious and boring...

9  Things that once brought him a measure of pleasure... have now become a chore...

This from a man who had everything the world had to offer... without restraint or limits!

The entire book of Ecclesiastics is filled with more of the same pessimism and cynicism.

King Solomon for all his wealth and wisdom in the end could not find satisfaction in life!

Of course... by this time in his life... he had strayed into sin and idolatry through his relationships with his hundreds of wives and concubines...

è Certainly enough to sidetrack any man!

This pessimistic book should serve to instruct humanity in the folly of leaving God out while seeking to find the meaning of life in worldly pleasures and distractions.

L They all fail to satisfy in the end!

þ The world occupies itself with the constant pursuit of something new and exciting...

¯ A new thing... to entertain and distract from the reality of the inevitability of looming death... and the passing of a fleeting life on the relentless treadmill of time!

We see it all around in our world today every time a new cell phone or some other new toy or new “thing” comes along... Lines out the door... crowds looking for Pokémon...

ÀIt’s actually quite sad... even pathetic when you think about the waste of precious time!

E But... this too is nothing new!

Ê The apostle Paul encountered this kind of world view in Athens... during his travels...

Ø Acts 17:21(Now all the Athenians and the strangers visiting there used to spend their time in nothing other than telling or hearing something new.)

But... the Preacher is saying there is really nothing new to see or do... it all amounts to reruns... new packaging of the same old things... Nothing new under the sun!

R The phrase “Under the Sun” is an idiomatic Hebrew saying... it has been understood and explained in a number of ways by various individuals...

Ò All of the explanations can be helpful and add something to our understanding I think.

Some take it to simply mean... life on earth... in a secular sort of way... as we find expressed in common usage today with sayings like...

“We discussed everything under the sun”... or “She is interested in everything under the sun”... and so on

Ê Others understand it to mean... Life without God... Or a Godless perspective of life...

As in a message given by Ravi Zacharius titled... "What is Worthwhile Under the Sun"

] Some take it to simply mean... “Out in the open or In plain sight”...

Another way it can be taken is to mean... “In the physical world”...

I believe the best explanation that I have ever heard defining the concept was given by theologian, pastor and bible teacher... R. C. Sproul.

E His definition is a bit technical... but it is at one and the same time comprehensive and precise... He calls it “phenomenological language”.

Ü Sproul is saying... under the sun means... the way things appear to be... to someone observing... phenomena... through the five senses...  from upon the earth.

A To the exclusion of any spiritual or metaphysical considerations...  strictly bald empiricism... what could be called... natural observation.

An example of phenomenological language would be the use of terms like...

“sunrise and sunset”... to describe our common experience of daybreak and nightfall...

â Ever since the Copernican revolution and then the invention of the telescope...

ü It has been understood that the sun is not actually rising and setting...

þ But it is the earth rotating on an axis as it orbits the sun... that makes the sun appear to be rising and setting... from the perspective of someone standing on the earth.

K Everyone knows that when the weatherman says that the sun will rise at such and such a time and set at another time later... that he is not ignorant of the scientific facts...

Ò He is speaking phenomenologically... He is using phenomenological language...

I hope this explanation helps with our discussion today...

Ê Particularly if you have never heard it before...

Solomon adopts a somewhat pragmatic resolution at the end of his life...

At the end of his book... he offers some sage advice for likeminded discouraged souls...

Ø Eccl.11:9 – 12:19 Rejoice, young man, during your childhood, and let your heart be pleasant during the days of young manhood. And follow the impulses of your heart and the desires of your eyes. Yet know that God will bring you to judgment for all these things.

10 So, remove grief and anger from your heart and put away pain from your body, because childhood and the prime of life are fleeting.

Ü Get it while you can still enjoy it... he says... because it doesn’t last!

12:1 Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near when you will say, “I have no delight in them”;

Ê Acknowledge God while things are good he says... because later... when it’s all only a distant memory... it won’t be so easy to be grateful!

L Good advice perhaps... all be it somewhat useless and late... for the discouraged old man racked with pain that has long since left his youthful vigor and opportunities behind!

è So we begin another year... a New Year... as we say... but in the light of Solomon’s sage wisdom... my question on this day is...  “What’s so new about the New Year?”

þ The earth begins another circuit around the sun... one in a countless number of circuits on the endless continuum of time...

s Is there really any significance at all to this essentially insignificant event in the big picture of things?   The Preacher certainly doesn’t think so!

K There are lots of people... making resolutions of all kinds... planning and promising to do things differently than they have done in the past...

9  We know about people going on diets and starting new exercise regimes to try to regain some of their lost vitality, health and youth...

E That’s all well and good... there’s nothing wrong with being as healthy as one can be...

But the truth is that no one is ever going to turn back the clock or stop the march of time...

À Time marches on and waits for no man... everyone grows older and everyone... if they live long enough... becomes more and more feeble... Just like the Preacher says...

Ü There have been very few exceptions in history... Moses and Caleb come to mind...

Perhaps a few others... but they are certainly the exception to the rule.... and in the end...

N They all died too! Rich or poor, wise or foolish, great or small... makes no difference...

ü One hundred out of every one hundred people die...

˜ It has always been that way...

Ÿ It is nothing new!

Y Solomon... the wisest king that ever lived... saw all this and he calls it all futility!

2 “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher, “Vanity of vanities! All is vanity.”

Vanity of vanities” is a common Hebrew superlative... expressing the extreme degree or the highest example of a thing... such as we find in phrases like...

“Heaven of heavens,” “Song of songs,” “Holy of holies,” Verily, Verily... Amen, Amen!

& The word in the Hebrew that is translated variously as vanity or meaninglessness is actually derived from the word for breath or vapor: Ha-bel... he-bel used 36 times in Eccl.

The implication is of a fleeting vapor... the temporary transitory nature of life on earth!

Of course...  the Preacher is speaking as someone looking at life “from under the sun”!

¯ But meaninglessness is not what God had in mind when He created man...

9  Emptiness is not what God desires for the heavens and the earth...

è God created mankind with a purpose... He created the heavens and earth as a dwelling place for man... for man’s good and for His own glory!

Ø Is.45:18For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself... that formed the earth and made it; He hath established it, He created it not in vain, He formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.

û The preacher... for all his wisdom and all his experience is missing the point!

The things that he observes may be true... but his conclusions fall short of ultimate truth!

Let’s turn now to Ecclesiastes chapter .3... As we continue... to hear what the wisest man... under the sun... has to say about life on earth...

1 There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven—

2 A time to give birth and a time to die; A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted.

3 A time to kill and a time to heal; A time to tear down and a time to build up.

4 A time to weep and a time to laugh; A time to mourn and a time to dance.

5 A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones; A time to embrace and a time to shun embracing.

6 A time to search and a time to give up as lost; A time to keep and a time to throw away.

7 A time to tear apart and a time to sew together; A time to be silent and a time to speak.

8 A time to love and a time to hate; A time for war and a time for peace.

§ This familiar passage is an example of Hebrew wisdom poetry at its very best!

Ò It is a beautiful example of antithetic parallelism... seven verses containing fourteen

pairs of opposites... fourteen is seven doubled...

â Seven being the number of completeness...

What we have here is a complete... comprehensive explanation of reality, under the sun!

Solomon employs here the poetic device... called merism... It is commonly used in literature and it is extensively used in scripture...

E By expressing the opposite extremes of a thing... it is intended to imply the inclusion of everything in between... to form the whole...

9  Like the expression “soup to nuts”... meaning the entire meal... including everything from beginning to end and everything in between... Think of Alpha and Omega...

è So what we have here... expressed in these eight verses... is Solomon’s masterful summation of all things that exist... as they are known... “Under the sun”!

3:1 There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven

Ü In modern philosophical terms... what we have here and following is an expression of... Pessimistic Existential Determinism... which embraces the idea of...

The predetermined inevitability of the course of life and death and everything in between.

This view breaks out into various nuanced schools of thought...

But it is by no means the only prevailing philosophy of life in the world or among believers... it is in competition with many others... we have for instance...

A  Pessimistic vs. optimistic existentialism, hard and soft determinism... indeterminacy and self indeterminacy, compatible and incompatible with free will and libertarian views.

E I can recommend a very comprehensive book if you are interested in further study...

“Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview” by Moreland and Craig...

Ê But the main distinction for us today... as we reflect on this text... from the Preachers point of view... can be understood to be between... Atheistic Determinism and Theistic Determinism...

Solomon is expressing his opinion...the views of a theistic determinist...

A Although it is sometimes hard to distinguish the difference... in his despair...

The main idea is that we were thrown into this existence without our consent or control.

9 We face all these challenges and difficulties with no escape and no say in the matter...

N And in the end we all die... Death is the reason that Solomon... and so many others face life with despair and pessimism... death is inevitable... no matter what we do!

N And because we can not see beyond our little world... under the sun with our senses...

Death makes life... meaningless... no matter how we may occupy or entertain ourselves!

So... the Preacher asks... what is the difference in the end what a man believes?

Ò Everybody ends up dead anyway... so what’s the point?

Ø Eccl.2:15-16Then I said to myself, “As is the fate of the fool, it will also befall me. Why then have I been extremely wise?” So I said to myself, “This too is vanity.”

16 For there is no lasting remembrance of the wise man as with the fool, inasmuch as in the coming days all will be forgotten. And how the wise man and the fool alike die!

& The Preacher expounds on the unalterable pattern of life and death...

2 A time to give birth and a time to die; A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted.

3 A time to kill and a time to heal; A time to tear down and a time to build up.

Q And so the cycle of life and death is set into motion by powers beyond our control...

è But... as I said... Solomon is a theist... he believes in God... he has retained some semblance of faith from his youth... although it seems to provide him with little comfort.

Eccl.3:14-22I know that everything God does will remain forever; there is nothing to add to it and there is nothing to take from it, for God has so worked that men should fear Him.

15 That which is has been already and that which will be has already been, for God seeks what has passed by.

16 Furthermore, I have seen under the sun that in the place of justice there is wickedness and in the place of righteousness there is wickedness.

17 I said to myself, “God will judge both the righteous man and the wicked man,” for a time for every matter and for every deed is there.

18 I said to myself concerning the sons of men, “God has surely tested them in order for them to see that they are but beasts.”

19 For the fate of the sons of men and the fate of beasts is the same. As one dies so dies the other; indeed, they all have the same breath and there is no advantage for man over beast, for all is vanity.

20 All go to the same place. All came from the dust and all return to the dust.

21 Who knows that the breath of man ascends upward and the breath of the beast descends downward to the earth?

22 I have seen that nothing is better than that man should be happy in his activities, for that is his lot. For who will bring him to see what will occur after him?

All of this pessimism may seem to have been warranted in Solomon’s world...

But we now live in a world where Christ has come and answered these questions and so much more!

Jesus Christ provides meaning to life!  Let’s begin to wrap it up...

4 A time to weep and a time to laugh; A time to mourn and a time to dance.

E There are ups and downs for everyone in life... they come and go... God sends both joy and sorrow to all...

Solomon implies... Who knows why? No one can tell... even someone as brilliant as me!

The Preacher says... The ups and downs of life are meaningless in the end... just repetition and vanity!

¯ It is true that ... the Lord does send blessings and calamity...

s But, I ask... is it all vanity as the Preacher insists?

Ø Is.45:6-7That men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun that there is no one besides Me. I am the LORD, and there is no other,

7 The One forming light and creating darkness, causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the LORD who does all these.

Why does God intervene in the affairs of men through well being and calamity?

So that men may know that there is a God and that He is the Lord!

The Preacher continues...

5 A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones; A time to embrace and a time to shun embracing.

Ü Buildings are built and time and war crumble them all...

Relationships come and go... and even the best of them end in the separation of death!

6 A time to search and a time to give up as lost; A time to keep and a time to throw away.

7 A time to tear apart and a time to sew together; A time to be silent and a time to speak.

] You get the picture... his worldview borders on cyclical fatalism... just face it and get on with it... try to find pleasure where you can... and don’t take it all too seriously!

Ø Eccl.7:16-17Do not be excessively righteous and do not be overly wise. Why should you ruin yourself?

17 Do not be excessively wicked and do not be a fool. Why should you die before your time?

8 A time to love and a time to hate; A time for war and a time for peace.

& And so the Preacher ends his tremendous poem... with his summation of the positive and the negative extremes of life... under the sun!

He goes on to end the book with these words...

Ø Eccl.12:13-14The conclusion, when all has been heard, is:

Fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person.

14 For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil.

â In spite of the fact that life to him seems meaningless... at best it is an unsolvable mystery...  Even if there is some hidden meaning behind it all... He concludes that...

~ Every person... if they are wise... will at least recognize the fact that God is in control!

§ Every wise person should live their meaningless life... the best they can...

K Even if it is without understanding of the everyday changes and challenges that we all face... because... God is keeping a record!

+ The bottom line for the Preacher is that all people should fear God... and live life       9   knowing that there will be a time of reckoning and judgment in the end!

L This limited knowledge and this grim attitude are the best we can hope for in this life according to old Solomon... since...

All is vanity... and... There is nothing new under the sun!

è This... to me... is the pessimistic view of someone who has drifted away from God!

Solomon was visited by God in his youth... He was greatly blessed and favored by God...

But he chose worldly pleasures over God in the end... and he lost his first love for God.

r In doing so he lost his understanding of God’s love for him and for all men...

Everything was reduced to meaningless mechanical repetition and fearful law keeping.

û The joy of life and the joy of salvation that meant so much to his father David was lost to him and replaced by a chasing after empty worldly pleasures...

* Which amounted to a chasing after the wind!

Ü So... after contemplating all of this together this morning... I want to close where I began today with the same question...

s What is so new about the New Year?

V As New Testament followers of Jesus Christ... we should have a different perspective on life and the meaning of it all... than our discouraged friend the Preacher...

We can agree that life without God... life without Christ is empty!

But life with Christ is filled with meaning and with hope... even the hope of eternal life!

ÿ God has provided new opportunities... new challenges and new blessings for those who seek Him and seek them... every day and every year!   Including this New Year!

He begins by making us new... in Christ!

The offer is still open today... for anyone to come to Christ and receive new life!

Ø 2 Cor.5:17Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

è And even though we have not fully arrived yet... we are making progress every day when we follow Christ!

Ø Phil.3:13-14Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead,

14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus

Every day is a new beginning with the Lord... He provides hope for all who seek Him!

Ø Lam.3:22-24The LORD’S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail.

23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.

24 “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I have hope in Him.”

¯ Today is a new day!  Today is a New Year!  Today the Lord offers us new hope!

Ø Ro.15:13Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing,

So that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Our hope is in God and in the Lord Jesus Christ who has provided us with new life... and has provided true and lasting meaning to life!

Ø 1 Pet.1:3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

J And so... I want to wish you all a very Happy New Year in the Lord my friends!

V Life with Christ is far from meaningless and it is not in vain...

Ü It is full of purpose... and rich with joy and promise for the future...

ÿ Let’s enjoy the blessings and the challenges of the New Year together...

Ü As the family of God!

V He is with us through it all and He will be there forevermore!

Amen... Amen!

A child will be born to us

Isaiah 9:6-7

6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.
¯ There are many amazing passages in the Bible that we could have chosen for our Christmas message... I have chosen this exciting text...  purposefully.
U I chose it because in it we have such clear references to the two advents of Messiah!
His miraculous 1st coming is proclaimed... in the first half of verse six...
 6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
Then we have...
E The punctuation mark (, : ;)... inserted at this point in the text...
It represents a prophetic pause... what is technically called a prophetic parenthesis...
A concept that is critical for understanding Bible prophecy!
It stands as representing a Gap in time... Between the fulfillment of the promise of the
1st part of verse six and the rest of the text!
A That pause... as we know... has lasted now... nearly 2,000 yrs. and still counting...
è The entire period of time that will pass between the fulfillment of the 1st part of the prophecy and the rest of it is known as the “Interregnum”... Meaning “the time between reining”...
Ê It is defined as the time period during which a throne is vacant... between two successive reigns or regimes...
Christ is and was truly King of Israel... He was mockingly... yet correctly declared as such at His crucifixion... His throne has remained vacant from that time...
The Interregnum... Is the time between the 1st coming of Christ... with His rejection as King of Israel... And His 2nd coming when He will take up His reign on earth as the rightful King...

R His 2nd coming is described in the rest of the passage... and is yet to be fulfilled...
It describes... His Kingly heredity... and the promise of His eternal rule and reign...
Y The passage also reveals and describes His divine attributes, actions and character... Beautifully!
L I realize that modern Jewish commentators... who consider themselves to be more proficient than Christian scholars in interpreting Hebrew, their mother language......
A Universally deny that this passage... or indeed any passage in the book of Isaiah... has anything to do with Christ or with Christmas... Sadly...
Ü But my friends... I want to make you aware of the fact... if you do not already know...
9 That this denial of the clear Messianic references in the book of Isaiah...
E And particularly here in chapter nine...  has not always been the case... among Jewish experts... especially when considering that the book is over 2,700 yrs. old!
Pre Christian era writings of Jewish sages contain no such anti Messianic bias...
Y Quite the contrary... This passage was universally recognized as Messianic prophecy...
A Prior to the rejection of Christ at His 1st coming by the ruling Jewish authorities...
Let me cite one respected source to back up this point...

3 In John Wesley’s Explanatory Notes: on Is.9... he offers this revealing commentary...
Describing the prevailing opinion of Hebrew scholars as to the person in view in the text.
è Wesley writes... “A child — The Messiah by the consent of interpreters, not only Christian, but Jewish: for so the ancient Hebrew doctors understood the place, and particularly the Chaldee paraphrast; although the latter Jews, out of opposition to Christ, wrest it to Hezekiah. Which extravagant conceit, as it hath no foundation in this or any other text of scripture, so it is fully confuted by the following titles, which are such as cannot without blasphemy and nonsense be ascribed to Hezekiah, nor indeed to any mere mortal man, as we shall see.”
9  Close quote... hopefully.... we shall see indeed as we continue our study now!

V Christian scholars have always understood and promoted the understanding...
A That this amazing passage is a prophecy concerning the two advents of Messiah...
It has only been in reaction against the Christian position that the Jewish commentators have taken the anti-Messianic, anti-supernatural position... Promoting the idea...
Ê That this text refers to Hezekiah... The son of the reigning king at the time...Hezekiah, by the way was already nine years old at the time of the writing of this passage...
Making the idea all the more absurd and incredulous!
Y But, even so... God has promised that a time is coming when the veil of ignorance and unbelief will be removed from Israel and they will understand the truths contained in their scriptures!  By the way we are speaking of actual literal Jews... not the Church!
Ø 2 Cor.3:12-16Therefore having such a hope, we use great boldness in our speech,
13 and are not like Moses, who used to put a veil over his face so that the sons of Israel would not look intently at the end of what was fading away.
14 But their minds were hardened; for until this very day at the reading of the old covenant the same veil remains unlifted, because it is removed in Christ.
15 But to this day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their heart;
16 but whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.
Ø Ro.11:25-27For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery—so that you will not be wise in your own estimation—that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in;
26 and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written,
“THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB.”
27 “THIS IS MY COVENANT WITH THEM, WHEN I TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS.”
è My fervent prayer today is that the veil of ignorance and unbelief would be removed from before every face... not only from before Jewish faces but also from gentile faces! Including some confused Christians!

6 For a child will be born to us,
Such a simple statement and yet it contains such profound implications!
â What we have here... as we will see developed through the rest of the passage is...
& Nothing less than the revelation of the promised incarnation of the God /man!
ÿ The human birth of our Mighty God... the Prince of Peace !
˜ The birth of this child... is speaking directly and specifically of Christmas day!
It harkens directly back to the previous prophecy of the virgin birth given in Is.7:14...
Ò Which proclaims the coming of God... into the world... appearing in human flesh...
Ø Is.7:14“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.
This is the incarnation of Jesus Christ... the birth of the Christ child!
He was born a baby and he grew and matured like all human children do over time.
§ Scripture makes sure that we understand that this child... this Son... was a human child ... and the man that He became... was fully human in every way... yet without sin...
As we see explained for us clearly... in the book of Hebrews...
Ø Heb.2:14-18Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
15 and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. 16 For assuredly He does not give help to angels, but He gives help to the descendant of Abraham.
17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
18 For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.
 6  A Son will be given to us;
Ü Many prophecies concerning the gender of the promised child were specifically given... from the very first mention of the coming Messiah... and consistently throughout all of scripture!
The first mention was in the Garden of Eden!  God said to the serpent...
Ø Gen.3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise Him on the heel.”
Y King David was promised that a descendent of his... would be his “Greater Son”... And that God would also call Him Son... and He would rule over an eternal kingdom...
Ø 2 Sam.7:12-1414 “I will be a Father to Him and He will be a Son to Me...”
E Joseph was told that his virgin wife would bear a Son... and that the boy would be the Son of God... conceived of the Holy Spirit!
Ø Mt.1:19-2320 an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
21 “She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
˜ The angel prophesied to Mary concerning her child... she was told that her baby would be a boy child... and that He would reign on the throne of David forever!
Ø Lk.1:31-33“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus.
32 “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David;
33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”
6  Given to usJesus Christ was given as God’s gift to the world... He was given... in love... By the Father in heaven... for the salvation of mankind!  God gave His Son!
ØJn.4:10Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
E And so we have the wonderful promise of Jesus’ first coming in these opening words!
 6  For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
ü And we know that this promise was fulfilled on that 1st Christmas day!
è We now come to the description and prophecy of His future second coming...
˜ Along with the revelation of His divine nature... and His amazing accomplishments!

 6  And the government will rest on His shoulders;
â The final and perfect government is what is in view here... this of course... as I said... is still future to our day... to say otherwise... as some do...  is foolish!
L Currently... the evil one is ruler of this world.  That, I think should be obvious!
E Jesus said so!
Ø Jn.14:30“The ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me.”
è John said so even after the crucifixion, resurrection and ascention of Christ!
Ø 1 Jn.1:19the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
r  But... the rule of the Devil is a limited time engagement!
E It will soon be put to an end!    As all the prophets attest!
V Soon the rightful ruler will take up His throne!
Ø Micah 5:2“But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in IsraelHis goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity.”
He came into the world from out of eternity at His 1st coming! And He will come again this time from out of heaven to rule and reign... forever!
We have God’s word on it... His promise on these things!
7 The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.
¯ But Christs’ rule will go far beyond just the re-gathered nation and peoples of Israel...
9  He will take up His rule over all of creation... as King of Kings and Lord of Lords!
E When He comes to rule... He will bear the ensign of the supreme King on His robe!
On His shoulder...
Ø Rev.19:16And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
 6  And the government will rest on His shoulders;
V Only the shoulders of Jesus Christ are broad enough and strong enough to carry the weight of governing of the entire universe! That is what this verse is ultimately saying!
Ø Phil.2:10at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
Ø Eph.1:21 – Jesus Christ is... far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.

6 And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
This is actually one name, one title, one description of who and what... this promised Ruler... this Son will be... and what He will accomplish!
Ê It is one name with four components... four elements of a compound name...
1. Wonderful Counselor,   Pele-yowetz
He is both Wonderful and He is Counselor...Some take these attributes separately.. but in the context of the following three couplets they should probably be taken together as one.
Ø Is.2:3And many peoples will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob;
That He may teach us concerning His ways And that we may walk in His paths.”
For the law will go forth from Zion And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
Ò The wisdom of the counsel of Messiah is wonderful beyond measure...
Y Far greater than even Solomon... or any counselor ever known!
Ø Is.28:29This also comes from the LORD of hosts, Who has made His counsel wonderful and His wisdom great.
Ø Is.11:2The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
¯ This Wonderful Counselor is also the...
2. Mighty God, - “God - the Mighty One” -’El Gibbôr...
It has been translated... The Mighty God – man...
Ø Jer.32:18 – The LORD God... who shows lovingkindness to thousands, but repays the iniquity of fathers into the bosom of their children after them, O great and mighty God. The LORD of hosts is His name;
Ø Ps.24:8Who is the King of gloryThe LORD strong and Mighty
The LORD Mighty in battle!
~ He is our Mighty God!   Next Isaiah describes Him with the title...
3. Eternal Father, - Ab-iad – more correctly translated... Father of Eternity... or...
The Father of the future age...  or... The Father of the everlasting age...
At first glance this title can cause confusion in the mind of the New Testament believer...
Surely Jesus and the Father are two distinct Persons in the Holy Trinity... and so they are.
ABut the attribute of Fatherhood in view here is of a different emphasis than that of the Father of the only begotten Son... It is on the work of Christ as Creator and Redeemer.
˜ Jesus is the progenitor of all of creation... including eternity future!
Ê In this sense He is the Father of Eternity...
Ø John 1:3All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
ââ So He is the Author of creation... but He is also the Author and perfecter of our faith... the source of our salvation!  Heb.12:2
V In a very special sense Jesus is the Father of all believers; we are called His children,
Ø Hebrews 2:13 – "Behold, I and THE CHILDREN whom GOD has GIVEN ME."
Ø Is.53:10But the LORD was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief;
If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring,
(His children)
He will prolong His days, and the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.
è Christ is the second Adam... As such He is the Father of a new generation... a new race of mankind! He is the Father of eternity... and He is the Author of eternal life!
R He is the Wellspring of eternity... the source from which eternity comes!
E Not only is He is the Creator of... space, time and matter... He is also the Sustainer of all things... He will provide for and protect His children... the redeemed... for all eternity!
This eternal provision and protection is another implied aspect of Eternal Fatherhood...
He eternally takes care of His family... as the head of the family!  So much in this title!
ÿ And finally... the prophet tells us that He is the...
4.  Prince of Peace. -  Sar Shalom
Ø Jn.16:33 “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
Ø Gen.49:10“The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes, And to Him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
Shiloh means the “Bringer of Peace”...  Literally - "The Tranquillizer"...
He is The Messiah...
Ø Hos.2:18“In that day I will also make a covenant for them With the beasts of the field, The birds of the sky, And the creeping things of the ground And I will abolish the bow, the sword and war from the land, And will make them lie down in safety.
7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
On the throne of David and over his kingdom
V This is the Christ... the promised greater Son of David... heir to the eternal kingdom...
~ Promised to come from Eve... to crush the head of the serpent... He was promised to Abraham as his Blessed Seed... that would be a blessing to all nations!
˜ This is the boy that was promised to Mary... He was promised to the nation of Israel...
þ He was promised to the world!      God always keeps His promises... literally !
Ø Lk.1:33His kingdom will have no end.
7 To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore
Y God’s Kingdom will be established on earth with justice and righteousness...
And when it comes... it will be without end!
¯ Nothing like it has ever been seen on earth thus far... but it is coming... and when it comes... there will be no doubt about it... all debate and misinformation will be over!
L All of the foolish speculations... and allegorical theories will end...
è Christ will appear literally... physically... in person... in the flesh... the second time...
û But this time with no reference to sin... as we are told in Heb.9:28...
Friends... Today is the day of salvation... Today is the day to take care of your sin!
¯ If you have not yet received Jesus as your personal Savior don’t put it off another day!
Ò Ask Him to forgive your sins right now!   Receive the gift of God on this special day!
~ The day of grace... the Church age... The parenthetic Gap that we spoke about... will suddenly come to an end without warning... like a thief in the night!
+ The world will be plunged into Great Tribulation... so devastating... that all flesh will be in danger of annihilation!    Then... Jesus will come!
When He comes this time... He will take up His reign... He will put down all rebellion...whoever is not redeemed by grace through faith in God’s Son... will perish!
At that time... Jesus will fulfill the rest of Isaiah’s prophecy... and all remaining promises and prophecies concerning His second advent!
7 The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.
˜ This is the promise of Christmas!
V This is the blessed hope that we have in Christ!
ü His 1st coming is accomplished... It is history...
˜ The wonderful child was born to us... the Son was given to us!
â In God’s perfect timing... the rest of Isaih 9:6+7... Will be accomplished...
Just as faithfully and exactly as the first!
¯ Soon we will behold our lovely King Jesus...
The Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. Soon...
His Kingdom will come... His will... will be done... it will be on earth as it is in heaven!
Do not doubt it!  Do not be troubled!  The Lord has come and He is coming again
è The zeal of the LORD shall accomplish it!     Merry Christmas!
