                               “Judge with righteous judgment.”

John 7:14-24

14 But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to teach.

15 The Jews then were astonished, saying, “How has this man become learned, having never been educated?”

16 So Jesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me.

17 If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself.

18 “He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

19 “Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?”

20 The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?”

21 Jesus answered them, “I did one deed, and you all marvel.

22 “For this reason Moses has given you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man.

23 “If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath?

24 Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

We pick up where we left off last time… in Jerusalem with the continuing heated controversy about who Jesus was… when Jesus suddenly revealed Himself publicly in the midst of the feast.

The people thought that He had stayed away out of caution and the Jewish authorities were thinking that they had intimidated Him into not coming.

His supporters were afraid to speak out too strongly in His defense for fear of being persecuted themselves. When evil thinks it has the upper hand it tends to gloat and bully the righteous.

What a shock it was for the self-righteous wicked when Jesus showed up in the Temple and began to teach God’s truth contradicting everything that they had been saying about Him!

14 But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to teach.

His brothers had challenged Him to go up to the feast and show everyone who He was by doing signs and wonders. He chose to show them through His astounding authoritative teaching.

Most likely He was teaching and commenting on the relevant annual scriptures that were the prescribed reading for the day….

But when Jesus taught, He did not just repeat the previous commentaries of others.

He spoke with insight and understanding that no one had ever heard before… His teaching was fresh, spirit filled and directly from God the Father, causing everyone who heard Him to wonder

15 The Jews then were astonished, saying, “How has this man become learned, having never been educated?”

His background and previous lack of formal education were commonly known by this time after three years of investigation and opposition research by His adversaries…

It was well known that He had not attended any formal religious training under an accepted Rabbi… which was the standard required by the Jewish religious authorities.

It is worth noting that the same thing could be said of most of the Apostles who themselves became authoritative teachers after His departure, the obvious exception later would be Paul.

This question stimulates an important and relevant question for the modern Church… which has adopted the same kind of limited and restrictive standards for its preachers.

The point is that while formal education can be very helpful in all areas of life, when it comes to spiritual truths, learning unchallenged traditional doctrine in a controlled and limited setting can lead to spiritual stagnation.

We get some insight from the learned Paul… into the value of informal, non-institutional, spiritual teaching and training in 2 Timothy.

Ø 2 Tim.3:14-17 You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them,

15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;

17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

This very important principle applies to each and every child of God… One should never be intimidated into silence because of ones lack of formal religious education.

The Protestant reformation reestablished the doctrine of the priesthood of believers that had been suppressed by the Catholic Church for centuries!

The Baptist tradition has always maintained both the individual priesthood of the belier and the cooperate priesthood of all believers from the very beginning of the Church.

Furthermore, every Christian is to be a student of the Bible themselves… after the example of the Bereans.

Ø Acts 17:11 Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

Since the very moment that the all sufficient sacrifice of Jesus Christ was accomplished… direct access to the throne of God has been opened to all believers

As indicated by the tearing of the veil in the Temple that separated all but the High Priest from the Holy of Holies!

Ø Mt.27:50-51And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.

51 And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom;

Also, every born-again child of God… now… in this age of grace…has access to direct teaching from the Holy Spirit.

Ø 1 Jn.2:26-27 These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you.

27 As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.

Now, all of this is not a license to free lance or to ignore well established, obvious doctrinal truth, but it is a mandate for every Christian to be used by the Lord to serve as He directs.

The Lord has appointed teachers in the Church, but not to the exclusion of all others teaching.

The job of the gifted teacher is to equip the saints for the work of ministry including teaching!

16 So Jesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me.

We know that Jesus has been saying this from the very beginning…

ØJn.5:19Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.”

Ø Jn.5:30“I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”

We have commented already in previous teachings that this is the same high standard the we as followers of Christ are called to uphold as well!

We are to teach only what we receive from the Lord! But on the other hand, we should not fail to share what the Lord gives to us with others either!

17 If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself.

The implications of this saying are far reaching… First of all, it establishes right at the beginning that being able to understand what Jesus Christ is saying is actually dependent upon the will!

That statement goes against much of what has become accepted, dogmatic theory for many   throughout the history of the Church. Which is a shame and has hindered the spread of truth.

The New Testament teaches that ignorance concerning the teachings of the Lord is a choice!

God is a God of revelation! He gives knowledge and understanding to those who are willing to receive it and submit to it and it is not received by those who deny or suppress it!

Ø Ro.1:18-19 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,

19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.

So, the principle is clear… as followers of Jesus Christ… we are to follow His example of humility and faithfulness to the revealed word of God… we are not to suppress it or mold it to our own liking.

18 “He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

Now this verse helps us to see this same truth from another perspective… the idea is that no one serving God is to speak on their own authority or to seek or to accept the praise of men.

Rather he is to give all honor and glory to God, who is the author of all truth and the giver of all understanding and blessing, without regard to person, formal institutional education or status.

19 “Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?”

This is a direct in your face confrontation and challenge to the self-righteous hypocrites who are trying to accuse Jesus of breaking the Law when they are actually ignorant of it!

It’s like the modern blowhard, pompous politicians trying to accuse law abiding citizens of wrong doing for exercising their constitutional rights of free speech, religious liberty today!

They want to condemn Jesus for healing on the Sabbath when it is clear from the Torah that it is perfectly legal to do so!

Just like it is legal, even if not approved of by some, for a person today in America to speak out in the public arena concerning their perfectly legitimate and long accepted ethical convictions,

And to refuse to engage in or support financially or otherwiseany and all activities that go against their personally held religious convictions!

Now when Jesus says that none of the Pharisees keep the Law of Moses that they claim to hold in such high regard… He speaks with authority and with complete confidence in His accuracy!

Ø Deut.27:26Cursed is he who does not confirm the words of this law by doing them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

Ø Jas.2:10For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.

Concerning the fact that they are seeking to kill Him… again Jesus is perfectly accurate in His charge… as the gospel accounts clearly and repeatedly record and confirm!

But of course, facts and truth don’t matter to agenda driven liars, as we witness every day in bogus news reports and the downright, incredulous drivel that comes out of politician’s mouths

20 The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?”

Have you ever noticed that when you catch a liar or a fool dead to rights in their deception or error they try to head for the high ground of moral indignation and self-righteous denial?

21 Jesus answered them, “I did one deed, and you all marvel.

Jesus doesn’t even acknowledge their false denial but goes on to challenge their wicked motives for wanting to kill Him.

This illustrates an important principle for us to remember… Don’t bother to engage a fool or a liar in debate about their empty assertions or false accusations… just stick to telling the truth!

Jesus ends the debate by citing Scripture as He very often does… another instructive example for all of us to remember and practice!

24 Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

Now, as we come to the close of our study today, we have one of the most challenged concepts within all of Christendom before us… expressed in this short verse!

Have you ever noticed… and I’m sure you have… that whenever the question of judgement comes up in conversations with unbelievers and the Biblically ignorant

That everyone thinks they’re an expert on what Jesus had to say about judging? Even if they have never opened a Bible, they can all quote, or they think they are accurately quoting Mt.7:1?

Ø Mt.7:1“Do not judge so that you will not be judged.”

By taking this saying of Jesus out of context… they want to use it as a weapon against all moral and ethical standards and they want to condemn anyone who calls evil… evil!

Our text from John 7:24 is the proper Biblical response to any such ignorant and foolish accusation… and it is easily backed up by other clear statements from the lips of Jesus!

24judge with righteous judgment.”

Ø Jn.5:30“I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

Ø Jn.8:16“But even if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me.

The correct understanding of the Mt.7:1 saying… in context must include the next verse and must be taken in light of these other clear statements concerning proper judgement

Ø Mt.7:1-2 “Do not judge so that you will not be judged.

2 “For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.

As Christians we are always to call evil, evil… that is never in question… what is in view here is that… before we go around condemning others for their particular sins

We need to always be sure that we are not guilty of the very same thing that we are condemning others of… or else… we will be condemned ourselves by our own words!

That is why is it so important that as Christians we know the word of God for ourselves and why we are called to a higher standard of living than ignorant unbelievers, liars and fools!

Something we need to always remember as we walk through this world filed with so many challenges and so many contrary opinions…

As we try to share our Biblical faith and our Christian worldview with others with conviction and with love!

2 Peter 3:7-13

7 But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire,

kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

8 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.

9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.

11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,

12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat!

13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

When New Years rolls around people tend to get nostalgic about the past and hopeful about the future. There’s nothing wrong with that, its good to remember and good to look forward…

But there is one thing that can discourage folks one way or the other… while looking back or looking ahead… and that is all the harm and sadness that evil causes in the world.

We have all seen and remember the effects of evil in the past… we still struggle with the presence and influence of evil in our world today

And we understand that… unfortunately… evil will still be around for the New Year.

The problem of evil has persisted in every generation since the loss of the Garden of Eden.

The existence of evilMoral wickedness, natural disasters… the presence of hatred, pain and suffering in the world… has been called the “Achilles heel” of the Christian Worldview.

It can not be denied that the origin of… and the presence of… evil in the world are difficult to understand or to explain… but that difficulty is clearly not limited to Biblical Christianity.

The reason that Christianity is singled out though… is because of its balanced worldview,

Positing that there is real objective good and that there is real evil, real right and real wrong.

Other popular views deny the reality of right and wrong… in the Biblically moral or ethical sense,

Claiming that such distinctions are merely illusions and convenient lies that we tell ourselves that serve to make life more livable.

I’m thinking of Darwinian naturalism, scientific materialism, secular humanism and so on.

As we know… those are the kinds of views that dominate in western thought today.

Christianity on the other hand, finds the source of real and ultimate good in the essential nature of an all good and all-powerfulCreator God and so, it is reflected in His creation.

While the false worldviews deny that good and evil are real in any metaphysical sense, Biblical Christianity holds the line for objective truth and morality…. And so, it is the subject of ridicule.

The argument goes like this… If there actually was an all good Creator, then… He never would have created a world with evil in it… in the first place

And even now, if there really was such a thing as an all-powerful, good God … then He would fix it and just eliminate evil immediately… so we could all get on with enjoying life without it.

This text we have for our New Year’s Eve eve message addresses… and actually answers those questions! Simply stated… God has His reasons, trust Him He is not finished yet!

I’ve titled the message… “What sort of people ought you to be?” The question is taken right out of the text and is an important topic for us to consider as we enter into the New Year!

The very question implies that we have some responsibility and some control over what we will do and how we will behave in the coming year! I trust that this comes as no surprise to you

I say that because we are constantly being bombarded today with these alternative worldviews that want to deny personal responsibility and promote a culture of victimization

Everyone has an excuse for their bad behavior and failures… its always someone else’s fault… It’s societies fault or it’s repressive religions fault, but one thing is for sure… it’s not my fault!

Consequently… we are flooded with claims of special privileges and reparations that are owed to all kinds of perceived minority groups

Groups that supposedly have been and are being oppressed and slighted by the rest of us.

But what does the Bible say? Well, it says people should know better than to make excuses for their bad behavior and that everyone is responsible whether they accept it or not. (Ro.1:18)

Case in point is this passage we have before us. It gives a clear warning concerning the fact that a devastating final judgement is eventually going to come upon the whole world

And it says that God is not sleeping or dead or a myth… The fact is that He is alive and well and patiently waiting, giving people a chance to repent and accept salvation

But He will not wait forever!

Given the knowledge and insight that we have gained from reading this divine revelation concerning God’s plan and purpose for allowing things to continue a little longer as they are…

The question is… How should we adjust our priorities, attitudes, and actions accordingly? Knowing that judgement is looming and changes need to be madebefore it’s too late

7 But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

The phrase that begins this verse… “By His Word” refers to the creative word of God

And it indicates that the God of creation is still very actively involved in the progress and future of the world… everything in it and everyone on it!

Ø Ps.24:1The earth is the LORD'S, and all it contains, the world, and those who dwell in it.

Because He made itHe owns it and He rules itall of it forever! But He does it His way and in His time… He is holding off on the elimination of evil for a while and for a reason. To save souls.

The judgement and destruction that is coming is upon ungodly men. There is nothing confusing or ambiguous about that statement. The ungodly know full well who they are, they are warned!

Ø Acts 30-31“Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent,

31 because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.”

We have three particular days mentioned in our passage, none of which are 24-hour days by the way… but all refer to specific times related to the dynamic actions of God.

We have the Day of Judgement here in vs.7; the Day of the Lord in vs.10 and the Day of God in vs.12.

The Day of Judgement refers to the end of this age when the current state of existence of the heavens and the earth will be ended. It is the final phase of God’s judgement of this world.

There are several judgements mentioned in scripture; some past, like with Adam and Eve, the flood, and the Tower of Babel

Some are present and ongoing like the forgiveness of the sins of each and every person that comes to Christ, the chastening of sinful believers and the remedial judgment of national Israel.

And then there are several future judgements still pending like the Bema Judgement for believers and the Great White Throne Judgement for the wicked who reject the Lord.

This final act of Judgement in our text will be executed by fire… Fire purifies away what is corrupt… There will be no corruption left in the New World that is coming!

8 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.

The great complaint of unbelievers, as we have already indicated is… If God is so good and so powerful“What’s taking Him so long to get it right?”

Time is a tricky thing to be sure! It is a paradox for us living within the constraints of time That we can find time to be fleeting in one sense… when we consider that life is so very short

And at the same time…quite the opposite… when we are in pain or in distressanxious or in great sorrow… time can seem to drag by so terribly slowly!

God sees time differently than we do… Of course He understands perfectly well what time means to us and how it can at one moment seem a blessing and another seem to be a curse.

But God is not governed by our conception of time… He uses it for His purposes and for our good… This saying of a day being a thousand years is not meant to be taken literally.

It is saying that our understanding of His ways is limited and we need to be patient and trust Him… which can be hard to do at times for sure... He also knows that and we all know it too.

But even when it seems to us that He is moving too slowly… He is moving at just the right pace!

9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

Now… depending on your view of soteriology… this verse can mean different things to you.

Soteriology is the doctrine of Salvation… how God saves people and who He offers salvation to.

This verse, taken at face value, with a normal understanding of the meaning of all of the words… using the literal method of interpretation… is very clear in what it says.

It says God is patient… toward you, meaning unbelievers… it says He is waiting for them to come to repentance… it can’t be speaking of believers because they have already repented!

It says He is not willing that any should perish… it doesn’t mean that He only desires that the saved would not perish… it means that He does not desire for the lost to perish either!

Ezek.18:32 – "For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies," declares the Lord GOD. "Therefore, repent and live."

Ø Ezek.33:11 "Say to them, 'As I live!' declares the Lord GOD, 'I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why then will you die, O house of Israel?'

It says He desires for all people to come to come to repentance… Meaning all without exception not only all without distinction.

9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness

OK… He’s in charge… but still… What’s taking so long? Couldn’t He just override the moral wickedness in men’s hearts and make them good… couldn’t He just calm all the storms?

Well my friends its not that simple… God has set up His creation as a package deal concerning the souls of men and the state of nature…

Ø Ro. 8:18-22For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God.

20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope

21 that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

22 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now.

The consequences of sin in the world will continue until they are fully eliminated at the final consummation of the age when the cleansing by fire will take place.

In the meantime, people have a very serious choice to make… and everyone must make it for themselves one way or another…

Whether to accept to submit to go God’s way into everlasting life… or to insist upon going their own way which leads to destruction.

Ø Jn.14:6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Jesus’ way is the way of love… He said so when He affirmed the two great commandments

Ø Lk.10:27“YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.”

Love is the answer to the question of what is taking so long for God to pull the plug on the current world system… His great love for the world and His purpose and desire for people to come to freely love Him!

Love is the highest virtue that there is, all other virtues can be understood as flowing from love!

Ø 1 Cor.13:13 But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

But love coerced or forced is not love at all… Love must be freely given in order to be real.

The value of uncoerced love is dependent upon the necessity for true free will.

Why doesn’t God do something… to stop the wicked from being able to choose the evil?

Because the value of free choice is intimately connected to the ability to love!

If God were to take away the ability for man to choose, He would remove the ability to love!

So, the rebellious can choose to rebel and the willing can choose to obey the will of God.

Because, to use a metaphor that Jesus used… for the time being… He is letting the weeds grow along with the wheat in the field…. Until the great harvest at the end of the age!

Ø Mt.13:24-30Jesus presented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field.

25 “But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went away.

26 “But when the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the tares became evident also.

27 “The slaves of the landowner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’

28 “And he said to them, ‘An enemy has done this!’ The slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?’

29 “But he said, ‘No; for while you are gathering up the tares, you may uproot the wheat with them.

30 Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”

If He was to pull up the weeds too soon… some of the wheat would be lost. If God destroyed the current system too soon the souls of the ones yet to come to salvation would be lost.

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.

The Day of the Lord is a well-established doctrine in both the Old and New Testaments. It will begin with the 70th week of Daniel, the Time of Jacob’s Trouble, the future Tribulation period…

And it will end at the conclusion of the 1,000-year Millennial Kingdom… culminating with the final fiery judgement that we have been discussing.

Ø Rev.21:1-5Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.

2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.

3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them,

4 and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.”

5 And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.”

11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,

Aren’t you glad we have such a loving and patient God who speaks to us so clearly to let us know what He is doing and what He expects from us?

He has given us the greatest freedom in all of creation… the freedom to choose what we will love! But along with this great freedom comes great responsibility!

Knowing all theses things and in light of the rest of what God has revealed to us through nature, conscience and Scripture…

We come back to the question of the day… looking ahead to this New year

what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness?

Should we be cultivating and shaping our worldview, our actions and our efforts to get the most that we can now out of this doomed world? I think not! May God continue to help us!

12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat!

The Day of God is the New Day that is coming along with the renewed creation!

Don’t settle for less! Don’t loose hope! Don’t loose patience or give up on God!

13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.     In the meantime… Love God, love your neighbor and… Keep looking up!

Ø Ro.13:10-12Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfillment of the law.

11 Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now, salvation is nearer to us than when we believed.

12 The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore, let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.
